At the completion of the 4 Workshops the students will:

 

  • Learn what is Pranayama & why we should practice it

  • Be able to identify the 4 parts of breath

  • Develop the ability to notice his/her breath, and identify areas for improvement

  • Learn strategies to increase his/her breath capacity with Asana practice & Pranayama

  • Learn how to use breath in Asana (postures) in a skillful and efficient way

  • Learn how to use Asana to prepare for a breathing practice (breath adaptation for Pranayama)

  • Learn effects of the use of Ratio in Pranayama (proportional relationship of 4 parts of breath)

  • Practice the effects of the use of Ratio in Pranayama

  • Learn and practice breathing techniques to regulate the nervous system

  • Learn contraindications for specific Pranayama practices

  • Learn and practice ancient breathing techniques in a clear, safe & accurate way, as taught by Gary Kraftsow, T.K.V Desikachar & T. Krishnamacharya.

 

 

 

I. Introduction to Pranayama (Saturday, 9/19, 3:00 to 5:30 pm)

 

  • What is Pranayama?

  • Why should we practice Pranayama?

  • Four parts of breath

  • Directional flow of breath

  • Exploring & increasing threshold

  • Introduction to Ratio

  • Introduction to Krama breathing

  • Breath adaptation in asana

Includes:

  • 1 hr. Lecture with some exercises and time for questions

  • 1 hr. Breath Centric Asana practice (postures) with breath adaptation for Pranayama

  • 20 minute seated Pranayama practice. (One can sit on a chair or the floor for all Pranayama practices)

 

 

 

 

II. Energizing & Calming Strategies (Saturday, 9/26, 3:00 to 5:30 pm)

 

  • What is Pranayama and why we should practice it? (Review)

  • Paradigm of Brmhana & Langhana (with application in Asana & Pranayama)

  • Brmhana oriented Asana practice characteristics

  • Langhana oriented Asana practice characteristics

  • Brmhana oriented Pranayama Ratio

  • Langhana oriented Pranayama Ratio

Includes:

  • 1 hr.  Lecture with some exercises and time for questions

  • 1 hr. Breath Centric Asana practice (postures) with breath adaptation for Pranayama

III. Heating & Cooling Strategies (Saturday, 10/03, 3:00 to 5:30 pm)

 

  • What is Pranayama and why should we practice it? (Review)

  • The subtle body: nadis

  • Paradigm of Heating & Cooling

  • Paradigm of Stimulating & Sedating

  • What is valving?

  • Why valving?

  • Pranayama techniques:

  • Ujjayi

  • Sitali & Sitkari

Includes:

  • 1hr. Lecture with some exercises and time for questions

  • 1 hr. Breath Centric Asana practice (postures) with breath adaptation for Pranayama

  • 20 minute seated Pranayama practice. (One can sit on a chair or the floor for all Pranayama practices)

 

 

 

 

IV. Techniques for Balancing the Nervous System (Saturday, 10/10, 3:00 to 5:30 pm)

 

  • What is Pranayama and why should we practice it? (Review)

  • Introduction to Ratio (Review)

  • What is valving and why we practice it? (Review)

  • Samana Pranayama Ratio

  • Pranayama Techniques:

  • Anuloma Ujjayi

  • Viloma Ujjayi

  • Nadi Sodana Pranayama

  • Pratiloma Ujjayi

Includes:

  • 1 hr. Lecture including some exercises and time for questions

  • 1 hr.  Breath Centric Asana practice (postures) with breath adaptation for Pranayama

  • 20 minute seated Pranayama practice. (One can sit on a chair or the floor for all Pranayama practices)
