"Song of the Builders" (again), by Mary Oliver

Updated: Mar 27, 2023

Looking for a poem to read this week in class, and inspired by Jack Kornfield and a story that he told in a video I recently watched (scroll down to watch the video), I come back to this poem by Mary Oliver, "Song of the Builders". I just noticed that I posted this on November 29, 2016, here it is again!

On a summer morning I sat down on a hillside to think about God -

a worthy pastime. Near me, I saw a single cricket; it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way. How great was its energy, how humble its effort. Let us hope

it will always be like this, each of us going on in our inexplicable ways building the universe.

Check a short video posted by Jack Kornfield on Instagram, telling among other things the story that inspired me to read this poem and post it again on my blog.

Take good care everybody!
