Pranayama Series

AT IMAGINE YOGA STUDIO

Increase your Vitality, Calm your Mind, Balance your Emotions and Regulate your Autonomic Nervous System with Breath!

Stay tuned for the next Pranayama Series

The art and science of Pranayama was designed and perfected by the ancient yogis as a way to expand the vital energy in our system. With the appropriate application of very specific breathing exercises, and having a consistent practice we can, overtime, regulate the autonomic nervous system (ANS), increase our vitality, balance our emotions and clarify the mind.

Pranayama is the fourth of the 8 Limbs of Yoga described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra-s.

This series of three workshops is addressed to practitioners who have already gained proficiency in breath centric asana, including yoga teachers, and counts as a total of 9 Continuing Education Hours for Registered Yoga Teachers at Yoga Alliance.

Session 1:

  • Biomechanics of Breath

  • Human Energy: Intro to Brmhana, Langhana & Samana.

  • Directional Flow: Ways to control inhale & exhale

  • Krama Breath: Segmented breath

Expect 2 short presentations followed by 60 minute practices to illustrate the principles covered. Practices will include asana in preparation for pranayama, about 20 minutes of pranayama and a short meditation at the end.

Session 2:

  • Summary from last session

  • Ratio & application: the proportional relationship between the four parts of breath gives different effects (nourishing & revitalizing the system, calming and grounding, purifying the system, balancing)

Again, each of 2 short presentations will be followed by similarly-structured 60 minute practices.

Session 3:

  • The nadi-s (channels in which prana flows)

  • Pranayama Techniques (throat, tongue & nostril valving techniques)

Again, each of 2 short presentations will be followed by similarly-structured 60 minute practices.

I had the honor to have learned Pranayama with my teacher, Gary Kraftsow, who received these teachings from T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar, and has very generously shared them with precision and accuracy. The more powerful a tool, the more we need to learn its appropriate use and application, and Pranayama is extremely powerful. I am forever grateful to Gary Kraftsow, and the faculty of the American Viniyoga Institute for these teachings.
